Marantz is not just famous for designing and building high-quality HiFi components, their home cinema systems are equally as impressive. When home theater enthusiasts talk about setting up their own cinematic surround sound systems, there are a few prominent brands that will pop up in the discussion. And Marantz will always be one of these notable brands. There are various series and models in Marantz’s arsenal of AV receivers, but the eye turners will always be their AV separates.
Marantz AV separates are top-of-the-line home cinema components, when audiophiles want to go all out on setting up high-end home theater systems, Marantz will most of the time be inside the picture. And usually, the Marantz AV7705 will definitely be one of their choices. In this article, we will be finding out more about what makes the AV7705 so highly sought after, and to do that, we will be doing a thorough review of this premium AVR.
Marantz AV7705 Review
The signature look of the Marantz AV7705 already screams premium high-end audio system, the stylish and sleek metallic front, with the iconic blue ring, it just looks gorgeous and brimming with elegance. The weight and feel of the AV separate give off a feeling that it is well built and packed with high-quality components inside it. High-quality power amplifiers are recommended or simply use Marantz MM8077 and/or MM7055 to play safe since the house sound will more than likely be similar and the engineers would most probably use them during the testing phase.
Surprisingly the Marantz AV7705 delivers a smooth sound without any harshness, we suspect that might be a roll-off at the high frequencies. The midrange sound reproduction is lush and full-bodied, quite warm sounding, with a bit of coloration we might add. The highs and mids are sweet-sounding, almost musical which makes the soundtracks in the background more enjoyable to listen to, and does successfully pull you in every time, filling you with emotions when the scores are magnificently composed. The movie sound effects are not as punchy and impactful as other brands, for instance, Onkyo. Does gives a layer of warmth to dialogues and vocals too.
The layer of textures does help give more weight to the mid-bass response, it is taut and clean sounding. The Marantz AV7705 is capable of digging deep into the bass extension as well, shaking the room as the volcano erupts or when thunder strikes. Which interestingly sounds quite musical as the overall sound delivery is a tad ‘soft’, we are wondering should we increase the treble level or simply change to more bright sounding speakers. Then we recall the roll-off in the high frequency which made us just continue on with our current journey.
The warmth and smooth sounding AV7705 do have their own merits as when the whole room is enveloped by the surround soundstage, there is more “feel” to it which helps with the immersion and not to mention it has plenty of details which makes the experience even more immersive. The accuracy of the imaging also helps with the excitement as the vehicles drive across the room in a highway chase scene, or bullets flying past you in an action scene. But, it somewhat lacks a certain impact, doesn’t hit hard enough. This doesn’t mean we didn’t enjoy the sound delivery, when it comes to ambient sound effects, the Marantz AV7705 excels.
When it comes to live performance, the Marantz AV7705 starts to make absolute sense, the musicality of this AV separate is exceptional. As the music starts, and you are once again enveloped into the sound field, there’s when you lose yourself and just focus on the performance of your favorite artists. These are lifelike performances and you feel as if you are at the venue yourself. You can just listen to them for hours without feeling your ears getting fatigued.
With the smooth sounding and that certain level of softness in the overall sound quality, it seems Marantz AV7705 is a musical AV surround pre-amp, more musical sounding than other brands. It is still entertaining to watch movies, but even more enjoyable to listen to surround sound music and watch live performances. If music playback is your main entertainment, then no doubt Marantz AV7705 surround pre-amplifier will be the best choice. If watching movies is the main priority then probably you should check out other brands but AV7705 is still worth considering. You might want to have an audition with them and find out about the sound quality yourself, as your ears will be your best judges.

Marantz AV8805 Vs AV7705
The notable difference will be the number of channels the Marantz AV8805 can process which is 13.2 and Marantz AV7705 is only 11.2 channels. AV8805 up another ante as it is capable of processing Auro 3D. The AV8805 also uses Audyssey MultEQ XT32 but with an addition of LFC/Sub. All in all, their features are quite similar but AV8805 is definitely the superior model since it is higher-end. The question is if the sound quality is better?
Having additional speaker channels will always have an advantage as you are able to increase the surround soundstage and move more air in the room. With sufficient power, AV8805 can go loud with ease and it has better clarity as well. The immersion is slightly more convincing and the delivery feels a tad more powerful sounding. All thanks to the LFC/Sub EQ, the dual subwoofers are able to reproduce a clean low-distortion bass frequency which helps to improve the home cinema experience.
The difference in sound quality is not significant enough to justify the big price difference though. Still, there is more love shown from the proud owners for their pride and joy Marantz AV8805 than the AV7705. Probably because at the price point of Marantz AV7705, you can pay a bit more to get a flagship AV receiver instead which ultimately saves you a lot of money as you don’t need to get as many power amps.
No doubt, Marantz AV8805 is superior to the AV7705 but not by a big margin. You should audition them side by side and decide whether if the difference in sound quality is worth the price difference.
Going the AV separates route can be a fulfilling journey and Marantz AV7705 is definitely worth your time to audition them. Especially if you like the warmish sound quality and often use your HT to play your favorite tunes. If budget is a concern, then probably you should just go for the straightforward route of getting an AV receiver which Marantz also does make.
Do note that your speakers also play a major role in enhancing your home movie experience and are the main influencers on how good your HT system sound quality will be. You shouldn’t spend most of your budget on an AV preamp and power amps and just buy below-average speakers. It needs to be balanced unless you are planning to upgrade your speakers in the future.
